The numbers of
musky in Lake St Clair and surrounding rivers
are very impressive and rival the best musky
waters anywhere in the world.
I was raised
casting musky on Lake of the Woods in Canada
this is also some of the best musky waters can
you find.
Musky casting is
my favorite method to teach, I always look
forward to the expression of a new caster when
the first huge musky follows to the boat and
attacks the lure as they are lifting it out of
the water. Some have got so excited they pulled
the lure away form them,
that happened again just last summer.
Having said that I
am a professional fisherman first and try to
keep my personal preference out of the mix. I
believe there is no substitute for knowing all
the methods and exactly what kind of water and
situation suits it best.
In the river’s you
have wed drop offs and points these can provide
some great casting opportunities. The deep water
adjacent to the wed drop offs is excellent water
for deep water jigging. This method is much like
walleye jigging, were you lift the jig fairly
fast and you fish the jig back to the bottom.
I have found some
expellant water in Lake St Clair for casting,
the key to casting and jigging is you have to be
more precise in your casting or jigging. You
can’t just throw it anywhere, you must locate
very precise locations these fish go to feed.
Now it becomes a
mater of depth and the time of day that the
feeding will accrue, I have had musky show up at
a prime feeding spot at the same time of day
many times, or until we caught them. This does
not mean we keep them they just sometimes move
on to another location after being caught.
Muskies will
constantly move in and out of your best hot
spots.
Now lets talk
about trolling, this method allows you to fish a
lot of water and you don’t have to be quite so
precise. With trolling you usually have more
lines in the water, now trolling has it’s
advantages to and the experienced troller does
follow ledges in Lake St Clair I know I
certainly do, However a break or ledge in this
lake might only be a two foot gradual drop.
This is the most
popular method of fishing in this body of water;
it is much easer for the weekend fisherman to
learn without spending a lot of time finding
those hot spots for casting or jigging. Trolling
can be a good way to go when most of the musky
are in the middle of the lake in mid summer.
Another very good reason I offer trolling is for
anglers who can not cast for medical reasons
tennis elbow and shoulder problems or if you
just get tired of casting.
FACT few Guides on
Lake St Clair if asked have the knowledge or the
right boat and equipment to fish all the
described methods in the same day. My 21ft
multispecies boat and my vast experience is what
you needed to be diversified giving you the best
possible experience.
I invite you to
join me for a wonderful day of musky fishing and
learning on these world class waters!!
